A Warship for the space cowboy on a budget
A ship that I usually turn to when I'm short on money is the Argosy. When you get your new Argosy, you will need to make several upgrades since its original intention is to be a somewhat well armed freighter. There is a region of space that I reccomend to go to buy the ship and get your upgrades. First, go to the Yemuro system to actually buy the ship.

I buy the ship there because close by is the Spica system, with all the upgrades you will need. For additional upgrades that don't take up space, such as the thruster enhancement and the RCS upgrade, I believe you can get them at Rebel Headquarters at Palshlife.

These are the upgrades that I currently have on my Argosy:

2 Missle Racks
15 missiles
3 laser cannons
2 laser turrets
Hawk Fighter Bay
2 Hawk fighters
4 sheild capacitators
Sheild Booster
Armaplast armor
Durasteel Armor
Density scanner
IFF detector
Auto Refueller
Flare Launcher
50 flares
8 Mass Expansions

The total price comes to 2.29 million credits. I don't believe the price includes the two Hawk fighters, which are 250,000 credits each. It might seem somewhat expensive, and it is. However, when compared to a kestrel which is 10 million credits, it's a bargain. It isn't a ship that I would use to take on a cruiser, but it does fine against those nasty pirates that attack in fighter groups.

It's possible to take on a Frigate/Destroyer or Kestrel, but I would have some escorts on top of your fighters helping you out. Escorts that I reccomend are gunboats, ligtning fighters, and Rapiers. You have a 75% chance of taking any of these ships over when you board them, so you have a good chance of building a fleet of some strong fighters after a little while.

Your sheilds are still somewhat weak, so you don't want to really do a lot of head on fighting with a large ship (except for freighters of course). The missiles and the decoy flares are suppose to help you with that, let you do more long distance fighting. I have lots of lasers so if a fighter approaches me I can wipe him out quick so he won't make too many passes. I considered getting a Tritanium armor upgrade, but that took up a lot of space. You might want to consider sacrificing something to get it, it's 1 million credits but I believe it adds significant strength.

The real drawback that comes out of this is that you are left with ten tons of cargo space. Getting an escort to pick up the slack is a good idea, I reccomend hiring a light freighter if you're in the business of selling commodity items from port to port. If you are not yielding big profits the cost of keeping a freighter as an escort might be more trouble than its worth, so you might want to consider boarding and capturing a shuttle craft (or hire a shuttlecraft as an escort). That will give you 30 tons total which should be enough for any rush delivery.
